Fans Of The Chicks’ Hit Song “Goodbye Earl” May Soon See The Iconic Track Brought To Life On The Big Screen
A movie musical based on hit song ” is happening!
The project to turn the group’s 1999 country murder ballad into an upcoming musical was teased by bestselling author Taylor Jenkins Reid.
Reid, known for writing books like Daisy Jones & the Six and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, recently appeared on to promote her new book Atmosphere.
During the interview, she revealed that she has been working on another exciting project outside of writing books. This time, she wants to turn “Goodbye Earl” into a jukebox musical.
“We’re taking the story of ‘Goodbye Earl’ and we’re making that jukebox musical with all the discography of the Chicks,” Reid told Clarkson.
She shared that the idea first came to her a few years ago. After mentioning it to a close friend who worked on Broadway, the two eventually collaborated on the project.
“One of my best friends in the whole world is a Broadway fanatic. She works in Broadway. And I was with her going to see Moulin Rouge a couple of years ago,” Reid remembers. “And right before the curtain comes up, I say to her, ‘I have a crazy idea. What about ‘Goodbye Earl’ as a jukebox musical?’ And I pitch her the story in my head. And she goes, ‘Okay, what’s the second act?’ And I go, ‘I think I might need your help writing this.’”
Once they began seriously developing the idea, the two fully committed to making the musical happen.
Reid said that they “called everyone we could think of in Hollywood that might know the Chicks,” to help get things moving. After that, it all started to fall into place.
Some really exciting news for devoted fans of The Chicks is that, according to Reid, the musical will likely feature songs from the group’s existing catalog rather than a brand-new tracklist.
After hearing that, Kelly Clarkson told Reid that she hopes one of her favorite Chicks songs, will be included.
Reid happily confirmed, “Let me assure you that it is.”
As of now, no further details have been shared about the upcoming “Goodbye Earl” movie musical. A release timeline or what fans can expect from the storyline is still unknown.
For now, we’ll just have to stay on the edge of our seats and wait for the project to officially drop!
